About Moist Heat Therapy

Why Moist Heat Therapy?

Moist heat therapy is proven to be one of the most effective methods to increase circulation and speed healing during recovery. Moist heat alone, or in conjunction with appropriate medication, is recommended by health professionals to ease pain, reduce stiffness, and improve flexibility in those dealing with chronic pain or stiffness.

Moist Heat Therapy – Triple Benefit

Painful Tissue                                                            Impact of Applying Moist Heat Therapy

  1. First, penetrating moist heat therapy provides the “comfort effect” and increases the elasticity of connective tissues, thereby promoting movement which is essential for regaining strength and range of motion following an injury.
  2. Second, heat therapy deactivates the pain at a molecular level in much the same way as pharmaceutical painkillers work, minimizing the need for pharmacological pain relief and dependencies to which they often lead.
  3. Third, penetrating moist heat is basically a mechanism for increasing the circulation and thereby delivers protein, nutrients and oxygen to the injured area, enhancing natural tissue healing processes of the body and accelerating recovery.

Why is moist heat more effective than dry heat in relieving pain?

Water is a more effective conductor of heat than air – in fact, moist heat has been shown to penetrate 27 times better than dry heat! In addition, body tissues are able to tolerate moist heat at a higher temperature than dry heat. As this intense moist heat penetrates painful body tissues, blood vessels dilate, increasing the circulation in the area.

• The increased blood flow
• relieves inflammation
• brings additional oxygen
• carries away toxins and waste for healing
• and provides relief from pain.

It is especially effective in providing relief from the chronic pain of arthritis, back or neck pain, fibromyalgia, sciatic pain, muscle strains or respiratory congestion.

What types of problems respond well to moist heat therapy?

Moist heat therapy has long been the preferred treatment for many types of acute (short-term) or long-lasting, chronic pain.

Headache, including sinus pain or tension headaches, can be relieved or minimized with the application of heat to the face or back of the neck. The lingering after-effects of sports injuries, surgeries, loss of limb (stump pain), etc can often be reduced by using moist heat (after the first 24-hours) to increase circulation to the area. The increased blood flow helps the body's own healing abilities to reduce bruising, swelling, muscle spasm, inflammation, stiffness and pain.

Tendon and/or joint problems such as TMJ, carpal tunnel, rotator cuff (shoulder) pain or any type of knee pain (whether from torn cartilage, hyperextension, arthritis or surgery) often respond well to moist heat therapy after the acute stage.

Many types of muscle spasm, back pain, neck pain, arthritis pain – nearly any condition that involves pain, swelling or inflammation – may be relieved to a surprising extent by a quick moist heat therapy session with your Thermophore® moist heating pad. Always consult your physician before starting a treatment regime on your own.

Moist Heat Therapy Product FAQs

  • Why am I not feeling any moisture when using the pad?

You must use the cover that the pads come with in order to get the moist heat therapy.

These covers are designed to grab moisture from the air on their own. If you live in a dry climate, you may need a three-layer cover which allows you to add moisture to the pad.

  • Can I use a towel or sheet instead of the cover and still get the moist heat therapy?

No, you must use the cover that the heating pad comes with.

The material we use for our cover is specifically designed to work with our therapeutic heat. You can potentially harm yourself if you use anything other than the cover. If you need additional moisture, look for our three-layer cover.
